Transcendence

Transcendence in education is a new but incredibly significant concept that will change the way teachers approach students forever. A teacher is considered to be transcendent when they have ascended above and beyond the traditionally imposed roles assigned to educators and formed a deep, personal connection with his or her learner. This connection is one of mutual benefits and profound, lifelong impact.

The example provided is a photograph taken from the movie The King's Speech in which the soon-to-be King George VI struggles to overcome his speech disability, eventually receiving the help from a man named Lionel Logue. Lionel creates an air of equality between himself and the future king in which he can effectivly help the duke overcome his stutter. Lionel not only successfully helps the duke, but does so in an intimate, personal way that leads the two men to become lifelong friends. Lionel is an example of a transcendent teacher.

The transcendent teacher learner relationship is composed of the following components:

  • Transcendent atmosphere: a warm, social, loving atmosphere conducive to fostering and developing transcendent relationships.

  • Transcendent interaction: authentic interaction that is mutually beneficial, loving, respectful, trusting, and development

  • Transcendent encounter: when teachers and learners experience a turning point that allows both to see their world differently
